The Tarot Garden (Il Giardino dei Tarocchi): A Journey Through Art, Symbols and Imagination
The Tarot Garden is located in Garavicchio, within the municipality of Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto. It is a remarkable artistic park conceived by the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, a leading figure in international contemporary art.
Inspired by the Major Arcana of the tarot, the garden features 22 monumental sculptures, colorful and visionary, each dedicated to a different card. Every artwork is a universe of its own: sinuous shapes, intricate details, and surfaces covered with mirrors, glass, and polychrome ceramics create plays of light and reflections that make the experience immersive and engaging. The structures, mainly made of resin and concrete, stand out for their vibrant, fairy-tale appearance that characterizes the entire route.
In creating these works, Niki de Saint Phalle made extensive use of diverse materials, including reclaimed and recycled elements. This choice not only reflected her sensitivity toward reuse and sustainability, but also her desire to move beyond traditional artistic conventions. The use of unconventional materials helped define her distinctive style, giving the sculptures an original and innovative identity.
Today, the Tarot Garden is one of Tuscany’s most appreciated cultural destinations, attracting art lovers and visitors seeking a unique experience. It is not merely an exhibition park, but a “livable” work of art to explore by walking among the sculptures and immersing oneself in the artist’s symbolic imagination, surrounded by color and timeless atmospheres.
